06/24/2019 Spotify Really Wants You to Listen to Podcasts
Spotify Technology has been investing in podcasting for over a year. It started by producing its own podcasts with well-known talent in music and comedy, and it's recently started acquiring podcast media companies, including Gimlet and Parcast, as well as podcast hosting platform Anchor. So far, its spent over $400 million on podcast content and technology.

Getting its 217 million monthly active listeners to stream more podcast content is essential for Spotify. The company pays out a royalty based on its revenue to music labels, which puts a cap on its gross margin. Podcasts could have much more favorable economics for Spotify, especially if it is producing the podcasts itself.

06/10/2019 Planting seeds: The new Podfund wants to invest in early-stage podcasts
As has been widely reported, Luminary was until very recently removing links from the show notes of podcast episodes displayed in its apps. The broad reason given for this was security, a pronouncement which raised eyebrows across the podcast industry, especially since other apps (including Apple Podcasts) manage to display podcasters links without difficulty. The links issue was problematic because sponsor and affiliate links are often a big part of how podcasts monetize; removing them did not exactly help burnish the company’s credentials as a neutral podcatcher at a time when there were also question marks over its caching practices.

06/03/2019 Podcasts are the perfect antidote to our poisonous news environment
We live in an age of informational excess. Twenty years ago, when I worked as a producer for the public radio program On the Media, my colleagues and I would bemoan the sad state of TV news with its short sound bites, its obsession with scandal, its tropism to heat over light and its “if it bleeds” aesthetic. In the decades since, none of those aspects of TV news have gotten better, but compared with the nastiness and disinformation that is everywhere on Twitter and Facebook, the cable channels increasingly feel like average sources of information.
