5 of Spotifys Challenges for 2019
In many ways, Spotify enjoyed a spectacular end to 2018.
The company finished the year with its first ever quarterly operating profit – €94m ($107 million) — something that challenged many of the long-term naysayers about its business model. In addition, amid its year-end financial-results announcement, Spotify confirmed that it was set to spend between $400 million and $500 million on acquisitions throughout 2019, including the recent buyouts of podcasting content company Gimlet Media and distribution platform Anchor.

Publishers are getting serious about podcast revenue
Publishers are finding meaningful revenue from podcasts, a format that, in some cases, offers a more viable ad model than video.
The Economist, which launched its fifth podcast, The Intelligence, this week, said that monthly revenue from podcast ads served by platform Acast has increased 50 percent in 2018; thats across the publisher’s five podcasts that collectively fetched 7 million average monthly listens or downloads. The Telegraph has said its prioritizing podcasts, which it has historically used as a subscription driver. In December, the newspaper cut under 10 staff from its video team. On Monday, U.S. sports outlet The Ringer said it made more than $15 million (£11.4 million) on podcast ad sales in 2018, averaging 35 million monthly downloads.

Why Fashion Brands Are Launching Podcasts
Despite their non-visual nature and limited reach, podcasts are becoming a popular communications tool for fashion companies.
Since the overall investment involved in podcasting is very low, especially for luxury brands that aren’t strapped for cash, it’s an easy experiment for brands to test out. Costs usually involve a few hundred dollars for equipment and online hosting fees ranging between $30 and $50 per month, according to those with experience in their production. Since most brands recruit a host from inside their ranks, paying more for a host is often avoided.

Anchor says it is Powering 40 percent of new podcasts
Podcastings greatest asset has always been its accessibility — for consumer and creator alike. But even the simplest medium requires a little know-how, and Anchors overarching goal has long been to further lower the barrier of entry for those looking to take the leap.
It’s not perfect, and it is not for everyone, but the service has done a pretty decent job leveling the playing field for many users. In fact, if Anchors self-reported numbers are to be believed, it is been a major driving force for new podcasts.

While many business-to-business (B2B) firms are still using traditional mechanisms to buy their digital media, some are increasingly investing in more novel ad channels, like podcasts.

How Podcasts Are Filling a Real Need
The entire podcast industry is small, around $500 million in annual revenue, reckons Lopez, and so is Wondery. Lopez, a longtime Fox broadcast executive before deciding he needed to scratch the entrepreneurial itch, says Wondery turned profitable on a cash-flow basis last quarter, has 8-figure revenues that have doubled for two consecutive years, and has raised all of $5 million in venture capital.

How to make your podcast stand out in a crowded market
Only 24% of science podcasts seem to actually earn an income, which comes in the form of advertisements, donations or merchandise, according to MacKenzies study. For many researchers who use audio mainly as a science-communication tool, making money is not the main point.

Want To Be Heard? 11 Crucial Tips For Starting A Podcast
When it comes to controversial content, podcasts have it in the bag. I do not mean the media genre itself is particularly racey; I am talking about the way we consume it as a culture.
Not everyone listens to podcasts; those who do tend to be diehards of the medium while others have never so much as heard one. Oddly enough, it is a fairly even split— with half of American homes listening to podcasts. That dichotomy is not present for many other media styles, but it actually lends a competitive edge to podcasts.
Listeners are extremely engaged— which is the ultimate buzzword for anyone marketing anything socially.

The Future of Podcasting is Educational
The United States is quickly becoming a podcast nation. According to a 2017 survey, nearly 25 percent of Americans—around 68 million—said they listened to podcasts. Forty-two percent were even willing to pay to do so. The largest contingent of podcast listeners (44 percent) are Millennials, and that coveted cohort's tuned-in attention has attracted advertisers, whose podcast-generated revenue rose from $69 million in 2015 to $220 in 2017. In the last four years alone, the popularity of podcast listening has doubled.
Even more interesting is what people are listening to. One would expect genres like sports, news, and technology to be popular—and they are—but they are all surpassed in listenership by one unlikely competitor: educational podcasts.

Podcasting Shows the Value of an Open Internet
The open nature of podcasting also means that there are lots of third-party podcast apps out there for the major platforms. Now, here is a possible weak point. Apple runs the largest podcast directory, and very few independent apps have the resources to run their own (nor would most podcasters bother to submit to some small directory). As a result many independent podcasts apps just copy Apples directory.

Spotify and Pandora Duke it out for Podcasting Dominance
Marketers go where the eyeballs are, but digital audio giants Spotify and Pandora are placing their bets less on screen time and more on ear time.
Both companies recently said they have marked podcasts as an area for significant growth and are investing heavily in exclusive shows and tech to lure users away from Android and iOS native podcasting apps and onto their respective platforms.
