Lessons
Learned After 80 Interviews
Here are the most important things I learned. I can’t
specify which person I learned what from. It hurts my head when
I think about it because many of the 80 said the exact same
thing about how they ended up where they were.
Here is some of what they said:
A) A life is measured in decades.

Serial
Podcast Tipping Point
Cultural critics have declared that the podcast has come
into its own this fall.
The explosive popularity of Serial, the public-radio
spinoff podcast that recently dissected a single 1999 murder
case over a 12-week period, is reportedly leading millions of
Americans to check out other types of podcasts in huge numbers.

Podcast
Downloads, Listens, and Listeners
What do the number of podcast downloads, listens and listeners
really mean? Which statistics can you really believe? And what
do they mean?
As he points out, the number of people downloading an episode
can be very different from the total number of downloaded episodes.
One person, who we will call a downloader might download
many different episodes. As he notes, people might have different
devices or podcast apps that all pull down episodes.

This
Is Why 2015 Could Be The Year Of The Podcast
Podcasts are not new: they’ve been around for well over
a decade now. In 2006, the addition of podcasts to iTunes proved
to be the tipping point that led to an explosion of new podcasts
and the introduction of millions of new listeners. Today, iTunes
houses over 250,000 podcasts.
Podcasts are reaching more and more people. According to Edison
Research, about 39 million Americans, or 15 percent of the over-12
population, listened to a podcast last month, up from 12 percent
in 2013 and 9 percent in 2008.

Podcasts
and Copyrights
Podcasting has a very low barrier to entry; all you need
is audio recording software and a means of creating an RSS feed,
be it through software or manual work. As a result, just about
anyone can podcast, and the quality of podcasts is therefore
highly variable; there are professional podcasts that rival
professional broadcasts in quality, and there are amateur podcasts
that can't even be heard clearly.

Ten
Years of Podcasting: Fighting Human Nature
When I compare podcasting to blogging, I think about how
blogging started blossoming online around 1999, tools sprang
up soon after, and from about 2001–2004 I would say it exploded
and hit the mainstream in a big way. Blogging and Podcasting
both began with early authors being technologists but both eventually
saw more mainstream and famous authors join their ranks. Blogging
took off in just a couple years, but why did it take Podcasting
ten years before the mainstream noticed its existence?

Joyride
Believes its new Crowdfunding Platform will Make Podcasting
Profitable
Thanks to Serial, podcasts are gaining some much-deserved,
renewed attention from listeners. Of course the two biggest
setbacks to the medium have always been that podcasts are not
as easy to find as FM radio stations, and they’re even harder
to turn into a business.
However, San Francisco-based Joyride thinks it has solved this
problem with a new podcasting platform. Initially launched as
a voice-activated service that made navigating through mobile
apps in your car easier, Joyride has pivoted to focus specifically
on the business of podcasts. The current iteration of Joyride
provides consumers with a quick way to search over 100,000 different
podcast shows in a variety of categories. And on top of that,
Joyride actually wants to entice podcast listeners to donate
a monthly fee to their favorite programs.

Podcasting
Goes Deep
For content creators and all who create podcasts, podcasting
is a barrier-less medium with no bottom. You can learn about
virtually anything and anyone on podcasts because they have
no format. You want to do a one hour podcast on how butterflies
mate, go for it. There is an audience for just about every subject.
And one thing proven in marketing today is the deeper you go
on a subject, the more value you create for your audience. This
value turns into trust and ultimately sales.
The key? Storytelling. Podcasting is a format where stories
can be told. With no limitations on your language or intellect,
it brings the campfire to anywhere in the world.

Reflections
on a Year in Podcasting
Figuring out guests is a big job.
I have a giant list of potential guests and I mull over this
list with some frequency, adding names and pairings of guests.
Figuring out how to handle people who pitch to be on the show
is tricky.
Booking guests is not a big job.
Most people want to tell their story. Once someone says yes,
it is just a few back and forth emails and we are all set as
long as you are clear about time zones.
Every guest requires several hours of research on my part.
I read everything I can find. If they have ever given an interview,
I listen to it. It’s fascinating and time consuming and absolutely
necessary.
The show needs to be interesting in the first 30 seconds.
I actually write a script for every single show. It includes
my introduction and all the questions and the outro. And I rehearse,
because I am a nerd, but it helps. Just like the lead in a news
story, the first 30 seconds of podcast have to draw the listener
in or you’ve lost them.
Sound quality matters.
I bought a real microphone in the spring. My husband gave me
studio headphones for my birthday in August. Still, I struggled
with getting the sound just right. It is better now, but not
perfect. I wish it was perfect.

Podcasts
Then and Now
I used to have a more hands-on, personal approach to podcasts
where I had download them and burn them to CDs to listen in
the car. This was before I had an iPod and years before the
iPhone. So the choice of podcasts mattered as I wanted to fill
up the CD for my slightly over an hour commute each way. I started
to listen to podcasts in the Fall of 2004, so that means it
has been just over 10 years of listening to podcasts. With the
popularity of Serial, there is a lot of new interest in podcasting
and it made me think about the podcasts I listened to then and
what I listen to now and how the whole process has changed.
