Podcast
Portable Recording Solutions
Podcasting was originally developed to let people create
their own little radio-like broadcasts for distribution over
the Internet. Part of the idea was to make it simple for people
to download podcasts to devices such as the iPod, but it quickly
became much more than that. Now podcasts are also used for everything
from distributing university lectures to providing self-guided
tours in a museum.

iPhone
Tethering
When Apple unveiled its iPhone 3GS earlier this month, AT&T
was noticeably absent from the list of providers that would
provide tethering capabilities for the smartphone.
AT&T has since said that the technology, which allows users
to connect their iPhones to a laptop and use the phone's network
to connect to the Web, will eventually be available. But what

Variable
iTunes Pricing
In April, soon after Apple gave labels the ability to set
different prices for their songs on iTunes, every track on Pink
Floyds Dark Side of the Moon was raised to $1.29.
Some music fans complained about these price increases, and
many technology executives and bloggers proclaimed that labels
were making the wrong move. But while sales of individual tracks
from Dark Side of the Moon dipped by 11%, album sales
remained steady. And all sales combined generated about 12%
more revenue in the six weeks after iTunes implemented variable
pricing than they did in the six weeks before that.

Podcasting
is Childs Play
Recent kindergarten graduates Jacob Mullins and Sophia Kiser
have already done something few of their peers across Sullivan
County schools have done.
It is something many older students and even some adults have
not done.
At the ripe age of 6, Jacob and Sophia of Miller Perry Elementary
School are veteran podcasters.
The two are among 17 students in the class of Jamie Whitinger
who have podcasted at Miller Perry, where all 85 or so kindergarten
students did podcasting this year. In addition, fellow kindergarten
teacher Felicia Kellner had her whole class put together a single
podcast.

Understanding
the Podcast Audience
One in four Americans have downloaded and watched or listened
to an audio or video podcast, according to a new study presented
online last week by Tom Webster of Edison Research and the Association
for Downloadable Media. Awareness of podcasting is up - from
37% to 43% - and Webster says that means it's mainstream.
In this 4th annual study of Podcasts, Arbitron Edison found
that Internet and broadband access are widespread, a factor
thats contributing to increased consumption of podcasts. Defining
podcasts as audio or video digital files, the study makes the
distinction that podcasting refers to the download of program-oriented
online audio-video such as talk shows or hosted music programs,
usually as an automatic download that can be listened to at
the user's convenience. It does not refer to the download of
songs or mp3 files.
