Spotify-owned Soundtrap wants to make editing a podcast as easy as using Google Docs
Soundtrap, a music-editing software company owned by Spotify, is launching a new product today that’s specifically designed to make podcast editing easier. The new product, called Soundtrap for Storytellers, is a full, web-based podcast production tool that allows users to record, edit, and master their audio. Its most impressive feature is how simple it’s supposed to make editing: podcasters can just cut words out of an automated transcript of their conversation, and the changes will be automatically reflected in the audio.
The feature is designed to function like Google Docs, says Soundtrap CEO Per Emanuelsson.

From Walkman to podcast: Sony Music moves into the podcast business, setting the stage for other music companies
Last Thursday, Variety reported that Sony Music, the global music conglomerate ($7.2 billion in revenue in fiscal 2018), has formed a joint venture with Adam Davidson, the New Yorker staff writer and co-founder of Planet Money, and Laura Mayer, the former executive producer at Stitcher.
The new entity, which has yet to be named, is structured as follows: Sony Music will own 50 percent while Mayer and Davidson each hold 25 percent, with the former taking responsibility of the various business aspects (marketing, sales, distribution, business development, and so on) and the latter two focusing solely on the creative side. According to the Variety writeup, Sony Music is also investing an undisclosed sum.

Universal Music Group Partners With Podcaster Wondery
Universal Music Group announced it is expanding its presence in the world of podcasting via a new partnership with indie podcast publisher Wondery. Under the terms of the deal, podcasts produced by Wondery will have access to UMG’s catalogue and its roster of artists.
The podcasts will be available globally on any platform Wondery makes its content available and will help build stories around existing UMG artists, labels and catalog.
