There is big money in podcasting. What does this mean for the industry?
Spotifys purchase of Gimlet and Anchor has already changed the industrys atmosphere, Quah argues. Deals are being struck with the assumption that money can be made here. And that changes the tenor of how people relate to each other in this space. Quah says the podcasting community still has to grow up in this sense, and forecasts cutthroat behavior.

How One Professor Uses Podcasts to Teach Empathy and Social Justice
Necessity is often the mother of invention. For Dr. Jessica Calarco, it was motherhood itself that necessitated—or at least sparked—innovation.
Five years ago, Calarco was a new mother, often awake half the night with her infant daughter. As luck would have it, the Serial podcast was released that year. The groundbreaking, Peabody Award-winning true-crime program by public radio producer Sarah Koenig precipitated a podcasting renaissance.

The Future of Podcast is Paid Premium
If you enjoy downloading podcasts for free on your Apple or Android app then listen up, because the future of podcasting could hit you in the wallet. The days of listening to host-read adverts about Casper mattresses, Mailchimp email and Squarespace websites could be coming to end.
The change was first signalled by the music streaming giant Spotify acquiring boutique podcast company Gimlet Media for US$230 million (NZ$340m) million in February.

Apple dominates the podcast market. But for how long?
If you are not someone who is part of the podcast business (disclosure: I make the majority of my income from podcasting), you might not realize that Apple is the dominant player in the field. That dominance is driven by two factors: its definitive directory of podcasts, and the built-in iOS Podcasts app, which drives the majority of podcast listening on the planet.
The slow shift from radio to on-demand audio continues, and companies are noticing. Investment in podcast companies is up, listening is growing, and the podcast advertising market continues to expand. Yet despite its dominance, Apple seems strangely uninterested in podcasting.

U.S. podcast audiences keep growing, 62 million listening weekly
Half of the U.S. has now listened to a podcast, according to Edison Research.
For the first time, more than half (51 percent) of the U.S. population has listened to a podcast, up from 44 percent last year. Put another way, 144 million people, or 20 million more people than just a year ago, have listened to a podcast.
Frequency is on the rise, too. An estimated 90 million, or nearly one-third (32 percent) listen monthly, up from 26 percent.
And 22 percent are weekly listeners, up from 17 percent. That’s an estimated 62 million weekly U.S. podcast listeners. The numbers come from Edison Research and Triton Digital’s latest Infinite Dial survey.

Why All Business Owners Should Consider Podcasting
It seems like everyone has a favorite podcast these days. The popularity and influence of podcasting are expanding exponentially in the U.S. and around the world. Nearly 25% of Americans currently listen to podcasts regularly, and there is no reason to believe that number will not continue to grow well into the future. With such a dramatic rise, it’s no wonder digital marketers and brands are also listening and working to utilize the power of the podcast to better connect businesses to a wider audience than ever before.

A Beginners Guide to Getting Into Podcasts
As a content-obsessed millennial, I have made podcasts part of my daily routine for years. I listen while commuting, cooking, running errands, putting away laundry, washing dishes or during any relatively mindless activity that can be done while wearing wireless headphones.
My bond with podcasts is so cemented that it comes as a shock when someone I meet at a party — or someone in my family, or a friend I thought I knew — tells me that they, in the year 2019, do not listen to podcasts. And never have. And do not really get what it’s all about. And, worse, do not quite know how to start.

No, Podcasting Is Not a Small Business
Spotify is in advanced talks to acquire Gimlet Media, the Brooklyn-based narrative podcast company, for more than $200 million in cash, according to Recode. Gimlet has raised approximately $28.5 million in venture funding from investors including WPP, Stripes Group, LionTree Partners, Graham Holdings, Betaworks, Cross Culture Ventures, and Lowercase Capital. Two years ago, the startup was reportedly valued at roughly $70 million.
Podcasting may be a relatively small industry in the U.S, but if I had to guess, Spotify has bigger ambitions than that. Just take a look at the stats: The U.S. podcasting industry brought in $314 million in ad revenue in 2017. Yet the global picture is much different.
