Podcasting
A disclaimer: when it comes to communicating science,
podcasting is my medium of choice. Though I have more recently
made forays into writing, editing and public demonstrating,
for me the draw of a live microphone and the prospect of a late

Blog
and Podcast Sponsorship
Tips to find blog and podcast sponsorship:
If you are a blogger or podcaster wondering how in the world
others in your field have caught the attention of major sponsors,
you are not alone. Working with brands can take your content
monetization to the next level, but sponsors do not just materialize
out of thin air and offer you cash for your blog or podcast
– at least, not most of the time.
I get email questions about sponsorships at least once or
twice a week: How do I find brands who want to sponsor me? Should
I work with such-and-such a brand or will it make my fans angry?
What can I do to make more money working with sponsors?

Podcasting
New Direction
It seems like podcasting has been around forever, but the
idea of people putting audio programs online for others to listen
to has really only been a big thing for a decade or less. In
fact, the term podcasting first appeared only eight years
ago in 2004. Now, just about anyone can make and upload their
own stuff - on any topic and in any format they choose. But,
as technology races ahead, podcasting is changing, particularly
as smartphones saturate the market.

Why
Do They Listen?
Why do people listen to your podcast?
Take a moment and really think about your answer. What is the
true reason a person listens to any podcast or radio show or
audio of any kind?
Does she listen to your show because you have the best content?
Is he coming to your show because you have the most attractive
voice?
Is it because she is your mom?
What is that magic spell that brings listeners to your show?

Monetizing
Podcasts
Have we moved past the notion that podcasting should generate
no income? While there are certainly still many purists
who think that all media should be free and that it should never
generate income for the creator, it does seem that they are
increasingly in the minority. There are costs to being a podcaster
that climb ever higher as audiences grow and production scales.
While it is true that a podcaster can start off at square one
with a cheap USB headset and a free hosting account, that changes
when audio quality becomes a limiting factor to growth and video
enters the picture.

You Need to Know to Podcast

The quality of the average podcast has improved by leaps and
bounds, too; just about every week sees a new crop of informative

Personalize
Your Podcast
The power of podcasting is enormous. Just think about it,
when somebody puts on their earphones and heads out the door
for their daily run or their long commute, you are the one accompanying
them. Your voice is in their ears and for a little while you
have their undivided attention. It goes without saying then
that you have the power to personally and massively impact the
life of someone you may not even know exists.
But with this awareness also comes a great question: How much
of my personal life should I share on a podcast? Or even further
than that: How much of my struggles, my victories or even my
insecurities am I allowed to share with my listeners?
The truth is that in order to build a successful podcast, you
have to create a bond with your readers.

Group
Podcasting Preferred
In one of my classes I placed students in groups to do their
podcasts. In the other, I assigned the podcasts as
individual assignments. The evaluations came back
from these classes suggesting that students would be more comfortable
if we had progressed from producing a podcast as a class, to
small groups, and ended with individual podcasts. This
way, we could troubleshoot some of the problems together, but
still allow for a fair amount of autonomy in the end. This
sounds reasonable to me and I would most likely do something
like this in the future.

Podcast
Potential
After leaving Mount Marty College a few years ago, a local
man has develop a passion for educational podcasts.
For many students and educators, new technology often shapes
the way they learn and teach. Podcasting is a fairly new technology
that allows educators to reach their students in ways that,
in years prior, would seem impossible.
A podcast is a digital audio recording, that may contain images,
and can be used by instructors to deliver content to students
in an easy-to-use format.
One local man even left his job at Mount Marty to produce his
own educational podcasts for everyone to use.
Mark Winegar, who taught at MMC for 12 years, has produced more
than 400 podcasts that are all available for free on YouTube.
Most of the podcasts are on computer science, which is his main
area of expertise, but others are on distance learning and other
topics.
He allows other educators to use his podcasts for their classroom
materials and they can embed the video on to the course website,
or simply send the students a link to the video to supplement
their work inside the classroom.

Quantity Matters
If you have only produced your show for a few months, or
even nine months, there will only be so much content out there
for people to stumble across. Podcasting is a lot like blogging
in that your potential for growth builds as you continue to
add content. If someone is searching for a specific topic you
covered in an episode, there is a chance that they may come
across your show and give it a look. With enough time and content,
more and more people are likely to stumble across your podcast
and check it out. It takes only a few key individuals enjoying
what they find enough to share it with their friends through
social networks and blogs to trigger a chain reaction.

A
New Podcast Implementation on the Way?
The implementation of podcasts in iOS has traditionally
seemed like an afterthought. In order to find a podcast, you
had to jump over to iTunes, find the episode you wanted, download
it, and then hop back over to the music app to play it, in the
same fashion as you would a playlist. Apple provided no options
to automatically download episodes, subscribe to certain shows,
or sync podcasts across devices. With iOS 6, this could all
change.
If the rumors turn out to be true, Apple will soon be launching
a dedicated podcast app along with iOS 6, which is expected
to be released in fall. Unfortunately, it appears that OS X
users will still have to interact with iTunes in order to manage
podcasts.

Make
a Connection
MAKE DISTINCTIVE CONTENT THAT SUSTAINS A PERSONAL CONNECTION
There is something that feels direct and personal about listening
to someone talk--perhaps because we associate it with telephone
conversations. Radio is a very personal medium, and podcasts
are even more so because people are choosing them in a way that
they do not choose things on the radio. With talk radio, you
have about five or so choices at any given time; with podcasts,
you have literally tens of thousands, so it is something the
listener made an affirmative choice to listen to, rather than
just something that happened to be on the radio. A podcast has
to be something that can sustain that level of connection.

Tips to a Great Podcast Sound
What defines a good podcast? Make no mistake -- there is
a difference between a good podcast and a not-so-good podcast.
A high-caliber podcast is much more than just decent content.
The sound quality, and the way a podcast is recorded, will impact
the value of the podcast as well. Podcast structure and pre-planning
are also important; do not skimp on the production, as it too
can make or break a podcast.
Podcast production takes effort, but anything worth doing is
worth doing right. Use these tips to help produce a quality
podcast that will be distinguished above other related podcasts...
1. Invest In A Good Microphone
A gritty sounding podcast is tantamount to a radio station that
can not be tuned in completely. Poor quality podcasts are not
going to be tolerated, and listeners will simply unsubscribe
rather than being subjected to a poor quality recording. There
are a variety of microphones available, and different types
are designed for different situations. Find a microphone that
suits your recording environment. Sound quality really does
matter.

Competitive
Intelligence for Webmasters
Some companies compete by getting into the minds of their
competitors. Competitive Intelligence is the process of collecting
information about competitors in a competitive environment.
These tips and tricks will help marketers better understand
competitive intelligence, and how to effectively compete in
their marketplace.
Individuals and companies use a variety of methods to gain information
about their competitors. Some methods are controversial, and
may even be considered unethical, but it is important that you
are aware of them. Even if you don't want to use the questionable
tactics yourself, it is important that you and your staff understand
them, so you can be prepared and protected if your competitors
decide to use them to learn your company strategies or secrets.
