Adapt
or Suffer
Small businesses tend to be more agile than large corporations,
but in order to take advantage of that strength, they must be
willing to adapt with changing times in order to prosper and
survive. This is especially true when faced with a difficult
economic climate.

Faith
and Podcasting
The growing number of American adults who own smartphones
today -- more than one-third, according to the Pew Internet
Project -- is fueling the trend of mobile technology infiltrating
churches. While more members of contemporary churches are reading
and studying Scripture on their smartphones and other devices,
traditional houses of worship have been slow to accept the technological
evolution.
For the early adopters, the change is simple, convenient and
happening organically. They already have a smartphone, which
can access multiple translations of the Bible in real time --
so they do not see a need to tote around the good book.

Skills
No Longer Required for iPhone Apps
Several websites have popped up offering tools to generate
apps with drag-and-drop simplicity. One is free, while others
charge for their services. To create, all you need is content
to fill them up. In this social-media era, that is surprisingly
easy to get. If you've got videos posted on YouTube, you have
got material for an app. You may not be able to get ultrafancy,
such as adding geotagged location data. But you can add photos
from your Flickr feed and text from blog posts and Twitter tweets
for a nice, personal app.

Social
Media in Emergencies
The American Red Cross has released a new survey that claims
Americans are increasingly relying on the Internet and social
media for disaster information. According to the Red Cross,
18% of Americans regularly rely on Facebook to obtain disaster
information. The survey also claims that the Internet is the
third most used medium to find out information about disasters--radio
and television are more frequently used.
Facebook appears, by far, to be the most heavily used social
media site for finding out disaster information. 91% of respondents
polled over the phone and 78% of respondents online said they
had used Facebook during natural disasters; another 25% of online
respondents also used Twitter. Personal blogs, Flickr and tumblelogs
such as Tumblr and Posterous lagged far behind.

Podcast
Nation
Over recent years, with Podcast technology allowing
us to take a wide variety of audio content on the go, our overall
listening horizons have been amazingly broadened. No longer
are we subject to the lowest-common denominator programming
whims of corporately-controlled broadcast radio.
What with the storage capability of the ubiquitous MP3 player
growing exponentially, the actual size of the compressed digital
audio files is seldom an issue. And with the increase in quantity
has also come an equally astonishing escalation on the creativity
end.

HHS
Guidelines for Podcasting
Dozens of federal agencies are producing podcasts for public
audiences — according to two online directories
-- and the Health and Human Services Departments Office of New
Media has released a new online guide on how to get the most
of the technology.
However, despite the recent activity, the status of federal
podcasting is mixed; although agencies have started new podcasts,
others have been canceled. For example, a user consulting the
U.S. Government Podcast Directory on the USA.gov website on
Aug. 9 discovered that many of the listed podcasts were from
2009 or 2010, or were no longer available.

Converting
Unfamiliar Audio Files
I ran across a bit of a podcasting dilemma this week: a
listener sent in an audio file he had recorded via a program
on his Blackberry, and the file came across in an unfamiliar
format with an .amr extension, a codec used primarily for GSM
phones. AMR requires a special player and converter and cannot
be played on iTunes, nor opened or edited with Audacity.

Podcasting
Populariy
A report on news.bbc.co.uk suggested that podcasts are once
again gaining popularity. Combination of the words iPod and
broadcasts, Podcasts were originally intended to revolutionize
broadcast radio back in 2005. And indeed it has. The demand
for timeslots on commercial radio stations have forced innovators
to come up with creative ways to get their shows on the air,
and with podcasts on the internet, they're able to reach people
far beyond the regular broadcast range.

Comedy
Podcasts
It used to be that the surest way for a comedian to surge
to fame was to play clubs and and appear on TV. Now if they
are serious about making money being funny, they would better
have a podcast.
Comedy podcasts are becoming increasingly popular in an expanding
medium that seems to offer something for every taste. In fact,
comedy provides a huge — and growing hunk —
of the content.

Social
Media
A vast majority of Fortune 500 companies surveyed by the
Center for Marketing at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth
found the use of all forms of social media -- Facebook and Twitter,
but also podcasting, blogging and more -- to be an effective
use of time and resources. Socialcast built that survey into
an infographic that more broadly examines the role social media
can play in helping businesses to reach their customers and
build brand loyalty.
