Podcasts
and Copyrights
Podcasting has a very low barrier to entry; all you need
is audio recording software and a means of creating an RSS feed,
be it through software or manual work. As a result, just about
anyone can podcast, and the quality of podcasts is therefore
highly variable; there are professional podcasts that rival
professional broadcasts in quality, and there are amateur podcasts
that can not even be heard clearly. For this reason, copyright
infringement leeches, often unwittingly, into a number of podcasts.
To produce a successful podcast, it is important to understand
and respect Western copyright laws. To help ensure that these
things are done, we have compiled some information about podcasts,
music, and copyright law.

If
Content is King, Podcasting is a Prince
A little better than two years ago, my business partner
and I decided to create our own Internet radio show. Our reasoning
was based on the fact that content is king for organic search
engine ranking, so anything we could do to help bolster that
objective was fine by us. Second, we needed to produce unique
and timely information to post to our weekly blogs and we felt
that podcasting would distinguish us from the competition. Third,
doing a weekly Internet radio show would force us to stay up-to-date
with our online marketing business.

Adam
Carolla Will Not Let Company Drop Podcast Patent Infringement
Case Against Him
This week, the company announced that it wanted to drop
a long-running case against comedian and podcaster Adam Carolla.
Why? Well, he just is not making that much money.
Carolla, for his part, refused Personal Audio’s offer to dismiss.
A statement, which appears on the page he is using to fundraise
to defend the lawsuit, says that although it is unable to comment
on the proceedings, Carollas podcasting company Lotzi Digital
Inc. intends to continue to vigorously defend Personal Audios
lawsuit and to pursue its counterclaims against Personal Audio,
which include a request that the Personal Audio patent be invalidated
so that Personal Audio cannot sue other podcasters for infringement.

PodSafe
Music
Podcasting is the new thing in broadcasting nowadays. Practically
anyone can create his own podcast and make himself known to
the world. Perhaps the best thing about podcasting is that it
is meant to be free. In addition to that, podcasts transcend
the boundaries of traditional broadcasting. You may be from
the US but anyone with access to the internet can listen to
your podcast. A person may be in Timbuktu and yet have access
to your podcast.
Music is inherent to the success of any podcast. It adds spice
and flavor to an otherwise bland broadcast. That is why a large
pool of resources has been developed by people in the podcasting
community. Beginners and veterans a like search for the perfect
background music or filler sounds for every podcast they make.
So how do you go about looking for that spice?
Despite the freedom provided by podcasting, there are some issues
you must address before jumping into the bandwagon and creating
your own podcast. Copyright and intellectual property rights
have been a main concern in all aspects of broadcasting for
some time now and podcasting is not exempt from that.

The
Culture and Design of Podcasts
Radio has a very long and storied history, and is influenced
by -- some might say ruled by -- some long-held, traditional
practices.
First, there is a clock. You do things at a certain time, to
a certain length, because things have to happen according to
a schedule so that people know when to listen.
But that means a certain kind of rigidity, along with a need
to adhere to some basic broadcast principles, like: You probably
want to appeal to a large cross-section of people who might
listen, instead of closely targeting just those who might be
interested. And, of course, you have to adhere to those silly
FCC rules that George Carlin outlined 40 years ago. You know,
the words you can not say.

Reasons To Keep Your Podcast File Sizes Small
I recently had a client ask me why he should keep his file
sizes small, for his podcast episodes. He wanted to know why
he would use 64kbps encoding or 96kbps encoding to get smaller
file sizes, when 320kbps would produce better quality sound
with larger files. I have to admit, I was stumped. I didn’t
have a good answer, and I sort of stumbled over an answer involving
upload limits for podcast hosting services… but I was not
even convincing myself at that point.

Why
Podcasting is Becoming Better than Blogging for Building Trust,
Engagement, and Loyalty
I think if we are all being realistic about where we’re
headed, the future of the way we consume information
will be through audio and visual much more than it will be through
text.
Furthermore, lets take a deeper look at the benefits of podcasting
and why it fits todays digital consumer so very well:
