Can
Podcasts Finally Turn a Profit?
Podcasters have been liberated in so many ways from the
strictures of traditional media, such as programming schedules,
standards and practices and overbearing network executives.
Unfortunately, that is also liberated them from traditional
revenue models. The podcasting sector is still sorting out the
whole profit thing, but several novel initiatives have made
podcasting start to pay.

The
End of the Dark Ages of Podcasting
The industry is still grappling with some very basic questions
about how to reach new listeners and improve content discovery
for existing listeners. While content becomes more sophisticated,
the delivery of that content has seen only incremental improvements.
And solutions don’t come from a few shows going viral.

The
Year We Started Taking Podcasts Seriously
Just a couple years ago, the idea that the president of
the United States would record a podcast episode from comedian
Marc Maro’s garage would have been hard to imagine. But in

Podcasting
Exoplosion
Right now, radio dominates — terrestrial radio occupies
52 percent of all audio consumption; satellite, another 8 percent.
And in total, those two comprise 74 percent of all audio revenue.
(Music streaming and downloads nab most of the rest.)
Yet they suck. They suck as user experiences; they suck as content
sources.

Must-Listen Architecture and Design Podcasts
Is there a form of media that complements city living better
than podcasting? Whether it keeps commuters company during a
morning train ride or provides a soundtrack for a stroll through
city streets, the ubiquity and portability of podcasting can
make a favorite show seem like a constant companion.

How
to Build Your Content Empire Using Podcasts
A good way to entice readers to still listen is to post
a partial transcript. That way they get a taste but still have
a reason to listen to your podcast. You can also create more
of a native advertising piece by creating a complementary piece
of content on the same topic.

Why
Big Brands Are Invading Podcasts
An estimated 46 million Americans listen to podcasts each
month, according to Edison Research, with shows covering topics
as varied as the latest Apple rumors, how best to confront the
Islamic State, and the analysis of old Seinfeld episodes.
But while independent producers and celebrities like Joe Rogan
and Marc Maron have largely dominated the scene since Apple
integrated podcasts into iTunes in 2005—at the time, Macworld
described podcasts as time-shifted amateur radio—a
growing number of large companies, including General Electric,
IBM, and Slack, have now launched a number of podcasts of their
own with names like Wild Ducks and Variety Pack.
This raises a few simple questions: Namely, why are these multi-billion
dollar companies getting into a medium long dominated by hobbyists
and comedians?

Podcasts
the New Blogs
It is the golden age of podcasting, and the format is open
to anyone with a laptop, a microphone, and access to a web server.
A host of audio producers, many trained by Ira Glass, are creating
narrative series with the same quality and creativity as the
20-year-old radio documentary show This American Life. Media
companies from TED to The New York Times are piloting shows.
Businesses are testing them out as content marketing. And hell,
if you want to make a podcast about your stamp-collecting obsession,
you can do it. Surely there’s money to be made—and audience
to be had—somewhere. It all feels very familiar. As Joshua
Benton wrote for NiemanLab, podcasts in 2015 feel a lot like
blogs did a decade ago.

Finding
Podcasts
At the moment, there is nothing doing for podcasts what
Spotifys algorithms can do for your music listening habits,
or what aggregators like longreads.com or thebrowser.com can
do for the scope of what you read.
There are a few ways you can explore this.
