Speak to Boomers
Boomers appreciate intimacy, and, like the best of broadcast
radio, todays podcasts are audio experiences in which the listener
has a one on one relationship with the host that offers true
lean-in immersion.
And baby boomers — 76 million Americans born between 1946
and 1964 — are a target market for podcasts. Not
only do they have nostalgia for the broadcast radio they once
knew, but there are dozens of podcasts specifically geared to
boomers covering topics from DIY to retirement, from cooking
to comedy, from technology to old-time radio.

Big
Corporate Sponsors Could Change Podcasting
Single corporate sponsorship of television programs fell
out of vogue in the 1960s, in favor of now-familiar ad spots.
But after 53 years off the air, General Electric is reviving
the concept in a modern (if retro) medium: podcasts. The Message,
a show entirely sponsored by GE and produced in partnership
with Slates Panoply network, is currently No. 14 on the iTunes
podcast chart, and might just change how podcast funding works.

Will
The Plan to Measure Podcasting Work?
I believe the goal on the Public Radio/Media side is
to push forward faster with a standard specification on how
to count podcast episode downloads and progressive stream download
playback. These new guidelines are only helpful from the perspective
that public radio/media now has a standard methodology
to count podcast audiences, but could benefit from adding broader
and more complete standards being developed by the IAB.
The public radio guidelines does potentially contribute to
the urgent need for the whole industry to agree on recommended
algorithm filtering of downloads. That is being worked on in
a larger more inclusive podcast working group with the IAB (Interactive
Advertising Bureau).

Ratings Podcasting Study Looks At Potential Of Changing Distribution
Model
The study offers suggestions to the podcasting industry
based on its data, including renaming podcasting because while
64% of respondents could define it, the medium needs broader
appeal with a name that explains it better like audio on
demand; and placing podcasts on streaming platforms to make
using them easier, the prospect of which doubled the number
of respondents who said they would listen.

Podcasting
is Perfect for People with Big Ideas.
There is a new breed of academic who understands this and
is committed to bridging the gap between academia and the real
world. Many blog, actively seek media coverage of their research
and appear on radio and television to shed light on the issues
of the day.
However, not many academics are podcasting and I am not sure
why. Podcasting is a great means of communication: it captures
the human part of knowledge creation. We can hear academics
and practitioners talk about what they do, why they do it and
why it matters, in their own words.
Podcasts are certainly growing in popularity. Recent figures
show that 1.7% of the time Americans spend listening to audio
is devoted to podcasts, and that 15% of Americans – around
39 million people – had listened to a podcast in the last
month.

Pioneers: Where Audiences Choose to Listen to the Ads
What would happen if programmers focused their attention
on the ads, treating them the same way they treat their shows,
with careful crafting to ensure that they, too, entertain. Could
this help to reduce the rate of audience opt-out?
Marketers are acutely aware of the need to do things differently.

Are The New Mommy Blogs
The popularity of mommy blogging exploded about 10 years
ago and has been going strong ever since. There are now millions
of moms who identify as mommy bloggers and some who do not,
but still fall in that category. This is a powerful group of
women. Many of them representing brands and products on their
blog as a way to supplement or create income. Mommy blogging
has grown into a multi-million dollar industry with one report
from a few years ago saying there are 3.9 million mom bloggers,
but that number is probably much higher now.
