Podcasting
from a Bloggers Perspective
There is a lot to be said about podcasting from a bloggers
perspective. The most obvious is sheer numbers. I can talk for
an hour about topics that would take me days to write about.
We can include actual audio, guests, and opinion — most importantly
there is no need to point out sarcasm or explain a joke. Plagiarism
is another factor to consider. I’ve lost count of the amount
of articles I have spent hours writing, only to see them on
some other website, surrounded by cheesy ads, bearing someone
else’s name.

Podcasting
the New Digital Frontier
There is a podcast for every kind of niche you can imagine,
from entrepreneurship to storytelling. However, there is a new
wave of popular podcasts that includes marginalized content
creators; those who normally find themselves pushed to the margins
of media and traditional platforms can now find themselves center
stage in this uncharted frontier of content production.

Where
Are All the Kidcasts?
And yet, while adults and teens could easily fill their
waking hours with audio, kids would struggle to fill a few.
The crowded Kids & Family section of iTunes has surprisingly
little to offer children, save for a handful of audiobook-like
storytelling podcasts, and some programs that spin off major
brands (like Sesame Street Podcast, Despicable Me, and Nick
Jr.).
The obvious follow-up question is why? Podcasts for kids seem
like such a no-brainer.

Reasons Why Podcasting Is The Future Of Storytelling
Since the beginning of time (and the advent of humans),
oral storytelling has served a critical role as the sole means
of abstracting experiences and emotions in narrative form. Ancient
oral storytellers were revered keepers of local knowledge, history,
and traditions in their communities.

Transforming
Villages Through Podcasting
The use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs)
communication devices such as the radio, television, landline
and cellular phones, computer hardware and software, satellite
systems as well as the various services and applications associated
with them, is at the heart of human development as it enables
people to access information, improve water and sanitation as
well as keep in good health.

What
Podcasting Can Not Do
Is podcasting the hot new thing?
Maybe. But it is not the hot everything, not even when it comes
to audio.
Look at Facebook, a platform that was driven primarily by text
until recently, when it became driven primarily by images and
later by video. Now the big news is that Facebook is pivoting
towards LIVE video.

Podcast
Network
Podcast networks are not a new idea, nor is competition
for innovative producers. Radiotopia, a podcast network from
PRX, is always searching for fresh and inventive shows. So is
Alex Blumberg’s podcast company, Gimlet, a magnet for former
public media veterans looking to get in on the resurgence of
the medium.

Podcasting
Dos and Do Nots
Consider following these simple podcasting tips to get the
most from your podcast and make it stand out from other podcasts
in the crowd.
DO
1. Make it Professional
Regardless of whether you are podcasting from your garage or
a corporate boardroom there is no reason that your podcast cannot
have a professional sound and feel. Use software to edit the
audio file and filter background noise. Listeners will not tolerate
poor audio quality. With the wide range of relatively inexpensive
software and hardware available there is no reason you can not
provide good quality audio podcast.

Podcasting
As Your New Revenue Stream
If traditional radio held the office of president, streaming
would be the vice president, and podcasting would be the speaker
of the house. Over the past decade we have started to move from
a digital democracy to a more direct democracy. Content was
once funneled mostly through film, television, and radio. Today
the options are more plentiful, and the audience is exploring
them more deeply each day.
