Experimental Sound Makers and Podcasters Unite at Brooklyns On Air Fest
When it comes to finding new forms of creative expression, there’s certainly something in the air these days. Or, more specifically on the air. How To Jumpstart Your Online Profile With A Podcast
With the best will in the world, even if you started a blog today, it would take months if not years for you to grow an audience of readers. That’s if you don’t run out of steam first. Even as far back as the blogging hey-days of 2009, the New York Times released data showing that 95% of blogs were abandoned. It is not surprising. Writing well is not something everyone can do (despite what many business leaders think about their blogs). An even greater barrier is the time they take to make. Given that research from BuzzSumo now shows it’s long-form content (3000+ word articles) that are more likely to get shared - that’s a big time commitment.

Podcast Listeners Really are the Holy Grail Advertisers Hoped For
The public radio producer had started a podcast as a side project in early 2017, and the exploration of her experience as a Pakistani-American immigrant had taken off faster than she had ever imagined, making its way to the top 50 in the Society & Culture category on Apples Podcasts chart and attracting some big-name advertisers. But the same question that has long plagued many podcasters nagged at the back of Eucephs head: Were people actually listening all the way through her show? Were the midroll ads that played throughout an episode breaking up the narrative? When she finally got detailed data on how people listened to Beginner, would she have to rethink the way she structured her show?
Since the beginning of the current podcast boom, often attributed to 2014’s Serial, data on how people listen to podcasts has remained woefully scarce, even as advertising spending climbed to an estimated $220 million in 2017.

Podcasting Is the New Soft Diplomacy
My friend Lynne Haultain is one of the smartest Australians I know. A dark-haired former radio host, she can boil down just about any complicated subject to a single, delicious epigram. So not long ago, when she told me her theory of the media and globalism and Donald Trump, my ears shot up like Tom Friedmans. Podcasting, Haultain said, is the new soft diplomacy.

The Podcasting Explosion
The impact of technology on how we consume information cannot be understated.
The most seismic shift has been to the media landscape as platforms like Facebook overtake traditional channels of news, distribution, and advertising. Not only does this put incumbent news conglomerates in an unenviable position, but it has also thrust tech companies into the reluctant role of the gatekeeper for society’s most important news and information.
While people may be divided on whether this is good or bad, there is another major change stemming from technology that is more clean cut in having a positive effect on consumers. The internet has allowed the news and content we consume to migrate away from centralized and capital-intensive sources (radio shows, cable TV), opening up many new and digestible formats of storytelling that were never before imaginable.
